We spoke to Richard about what drives his love for guiding and the highlights of his career.
What inspired you to become a safari driver-guide?
I studied Geography in school, which inspired my curiosity about physical features like mountains, rivers, lakes, and savannahs. That led me to join a safari company so I could explore these interests further. In college, I studied flora, fauna, and conservation, which strengthened my passion even more.
What is one unforgettable wildlife moment you’ve witnessed?
Watching a group of hyenas hunt a warthog in Ngorongoro. Unlike big cats, which kill faster by choking the prey, hyenas kill slowly by inflicting multiple bites. It’s painful and a very raw scene of nature
What makes Rickshaw Travels special to you?
The way employees are treated—we feel more like family members than workers.
What is your top tip for someone going on their first safari?
Respect nature, be passionate about wildlife, and enjoy.
What’s your favourite route or hidden gem in the parks?
Central Serengeti. It’s perfectly located to cover different areas of the national park.
Nearly two decades later, Richard continues to bring the wild to life for every traveller he guides; combining knowledge, experience, and heartfelt enthusiasm. For him, guiding is not just a profession; it is a calling nurtured by a lifelong love for nature.
