Kenya will host the first annual Magical Kenya Elephant Naming Festival in August 2021.
Kenya Tourism Board CEO, Dr Betty Radier, said the annual event would go a long way to support tourism and wildlife conservation efforts.
She added that the festival had the potential to encourage more people to engage in conservation efforts. It also offers an opportunity for tourists to learn more about elephants, other wildlife and Kenya’s heritage.
During the elephant-naming ceremony individuals who have contributed to conservation will be given the opportunity to put forward a name.
The elephants will be christened with two names, the second being a Maasai name based on the animal’s profile, history, role in the family and physical attributes. With a population of around 34 000 elephants, Kenya has the fourth-largest number of elephants in the world.
