In South Africa, the UNiTE Campaign brings together various UN agencies to organize an event that supports the battle against gender-based violence. The UN Gender Theme Group under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE Campaign, is organizing a Bungee Jump on the Orlando Towers in Soweto (Dynamo Street, Corner, Old Potch Road, Orlando) on 8 March 2012 from 13h00 to 14h00.
The primary aim of the “Take a Jump for Women’s Rights” initiative is to create public awareness about violence against women and girls. The objectives are the prevention of violence against women, the provision of services to survivors of violence, the promotion of justice and the end of impunity. In South Africa, women are exposed to various types of violence including sexual abuse, emotional, physical and economic violence as well as harmful traditional practices.
Launched in 2008, United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women and Girls Campaign is a multi-year effort aimed at raising public awareness and increasing political will and resources to prevent and end violence against women and girls around the world. The global vision of the UNiTE campaign is a world free from violence against women and girls, which can only be realized through meaningful and ongoing political commitment by national governments, backed by action and adequate resources. Africa UNiTE is the regional component of the global campaign and a continent-wide partnership to end all violence against women and girls. International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900′s, a time of great expansion and industrialization in many countries, as well as exponential population growth and the emergence of new ideologies consistent with human rights, gender equality, liberal ideals and justice. Every year on 8 March thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements and milestones in gender equality and the empowerment of women.
